  1. Watercolour of Samir, a little green dinosaur, strolling along a moonlit path between tall ferns, a pink bell flower beside him

Samir the little dinosaur took a slow evening walk in Whispering Fern Valley. The sky was deep blue. A round moon peeked over the tall ferns and made a soft silver glow. Samir did not run. He did not stomp. He took one small step, then another small step. His feet went pat, pat, pat on the cool path. "Good evening, ferns," Samir whispered. The ferns made a hush, hush sound, like a quiet song. Samir smiled. He liked that sound. It felt like a soft blanket for his ears. A tiny breeze moved the leaves. They tickled his nose. He gave a little giggle, then put a hand near his mouth. "Shhh," he said. "Night time is for soft sounds." Samir stopped by a smooth stone. He put his hand on it. The stone felt cool and calm. He waited and listened. Far away, water went drip, drip. Close by, a cricket went chirp, then got quiet again. "I will not hurry," Samir said. "Slow is good. Slow helps my body feel ready for rest." He took a big easy breath in. Then he let it out, nice and long. His shoulders dropped. His tummy felt warm and safe. The moon made a bright little path on the ground. Samir followed it, step by step. He waved to a sleepy flower. Its petals were closed tight, like little hands at rest. "Good night, flower," he whispered. "Thank you for being pretty all day." He walked on, slow and happy, ready to say good night to the brook.

  2. Watercolour of Samir sitting on the grassy bank of the brook, watching fireflies glow above the moonlit water

Soon Samir heard the brook. It sang a soft song, slip, slip, slip over round stones. He sat on the grassy bank and let his feet rest. He did not splash. He just watched. Little waves winked in the moonlight. "Good night, brook," Samir whispered. "Thank you for your quiet song." The brook seemed to answer with a gentle ripple. Samir nodded. "I hear you," he said. "I am going slow, just like you." He counted three easy breaths. One. Two. Three. His eyes felt softer. His arms felt loose. Noticing the quiet water helped his busy thoughts grow still. Then tiny lights began to blink above the ferns. Fireflies! They floated like small warm stars. One light drifted close to Samir's nose, then drifted away. He did not grab. He only watched. "Good night, fireflies," he whispered. "Your lights are so kind." The fireflies blinked once, twice, three times, as if they said good night back. Samir clapped his hands very softly. Pat, pat. "Slow lights, slow brook, slow me," he said. He hugged his knees and listened. The valley was full of tiny wonders, and each one felt like a small gift. A moth rested on a leaf. A pebble shone like a little moon. Samir smiled at them too. "Good night, small friends," he said. "I see you. Thank you for helping me feel peaceful." Then he stood up, slow and careful, and turned toward home.

  3. Watercolour of Samir curled up asleep in his round mossy nest, a leafy branch above and the moon behind him

Samir followed the silver path back to his mossy nest. The nest was round and green and very soft. It smelled like fresh leaves and warm earth. He patted the moss with both hands. "Hello, nest," he whispered. "I am ready now." Before he curled up, he looked at the moon. It hung low and bright above the ferns. "Good night, bright moon," Samir said. "Thank you for lighting my slow walk." The moon seemed to glow a little kinder. Samir put a hand on his chest. His heart went thump, thump, nice and steady. His breaths were long and quiet. He climbed into the nest and pulled a leafy cover up to his chin. The ferns whispered hush, hush. Far away, the brook still sang slip, slip. The fireflies blinked once more, then grew dim. Samir wiggled until every part of him felt cozy. His tail tucked in. His feet got still. "I went slow," he murmured. "I noticed the quiet wonders. Now my mind is calm. Now my body is ready for sleep." His eyes blinked. They grew heavy. He gave one slow yawn. "Good night, valley. Good night, me." The moon kept watch. The moss held him close. Samir's last whisper was softer than a feather. Then his eyes closed all the way. His breathing became deep and even. Whispering Fern Valley grew extra quiet, and Samir the little dinosaur fell fast asleep.
